Classification:Kingdom: Animalia
Subphylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Primates
Family: Callitrichidae
Genus: Saguinus
Species: S. Oedipus Vocals:The cotton-top tamarin vocalizes with birdlike whistles, soft chirping soundsa and high-pitched trilling.
Over the first twenty weeks after a cotton-top tamarin is born, it is not fully capable of producing the range of vocalizations that an adult monkey can.
The alarm call is the most heavily represented. Combination of long calls encompass a range of contact calls that are produced by isolated individuals using chirps and whistles. It is issued in the presence of kin when there is a threatening predator. Predators of the cotton-top tamarin include snakes, ocelots, tayras, and most notably, hawks. Early observations by Patricia Neyman even showed that cotton-tops will produce diverse sets of alarm calls that can discriminate the presence of birds of prey versus ground-based predators. Size:Height: 232 mm (M & F) Weight: 411 g (M), 430 g (F) Habitat:Cotton-top Tamarins are found in northwest Colombia. They prefer forest habitats and move through the forest canopy in search of food, although they will sometimes forage on the ground. Young: A female cotton top tamrin carries 1-2 babies. Adult individuals work together to help to rear tamarin young, sharing the feeding and carrying of the young. Feeding:In the wild they eat fruit, nectar, vegetation, tree sap, insects, small lizards, and eggs. Cotton-headed tamarins obtain the water they need by licking leaves that are wet with rain or dew, rather than expose themselves to predation by venturing down onto the forest floor.
